You can especially feel it as you drive up Union Road past the high school. But you can also feel it at home, in the stores, and even in the neighboring communities.

For the second straight year the Trotwood-Madison Rams are heading to the state football championship finals.

Now this distinction does not come lightly. Nor is it lost on Coach Maurice Douglass who (as a Trotwood senior) helped lead his 1981 Trotwood team to the state final. And most of all it is treasured by each of the nearly 120 Division II high schools accross Ohio.

But at times during last Fridays game against Columbus' Marion-Franklin the vibrations went a little dim as Trotwood's 20-6 halftime lead was eroded. You could feel the thunder return in the fourth quarter as the Rams seem to come back alive and the seat warmers were empty on the Northmant Stadium bleachers, the fans never sat down again. The Rams won 47-44.

The Trotwood Rams Football Team is on the march to Masillon waving their 14-0 record to face Avon Friday night for the state championship trophy. Busses (seats available for $35) will carry fans, along with many carpools hastily arranged for the 3 and-a-half hour trek across Ohio.

Signs wishing the team good luck appeared in stores around town. The morning talk at the coffee shops is about the Rams offense and defensive tactics.
The vibrations are turning into a rumble. And a win Friday night could result in a magnitude 8 shake. That was the loud and clear message Monday from IHL commissioner Dennis Hextall in Trotwood’s Hara Arena, home of the Dayton Gems.

Hextall and Dayton Gems ownership partner Rob Garfield assured about 100 fans attending the press conference the Gems will return to the ice this fall.

The 2010-11 season schedule will reflect a few changes that include an earlier playoff schedule in April with the regular season ending in March. The 70 game schedule, down from last year’s 76, will be released around the 2nd week of June.

As for the Gems, Garfield has his work cut out for him. “My immediate priorities are to get our new sales team in place by May 15 and a new coach by June 1.”

Garfield said they wouldn’t have a short list of coach candidates until all the playoffs are complete. “We are absolutely not going the cheap route when it comes to our coach.” “We are looking for a young and aggressive coach that holds the players accountable.”

“Fans don’t want to just watch the team skate up and down the ice.” “If a player doesn’t want to check, then he is out of here.”

Garfield visions rebuilding the team from the back to the front. “We’ll start with goaltending, then defense, then forwards.” “We’re going to produce a product people have just not seen in Dayton before.”

“We are definitely not taking fighting out of the league,” acknowledged Hextall. Any changes to the rules will be designed to be closer to the NFL rules. Hextall likes that style of play and it should make it easier for the players if the get called up.

The other big change for Dayton fans is the new ticket prices. Season ticket prices will reflect a $200 discount over the individual game tickets. All individual game tickets will cost $10 for adults and $7 for students and seniors. That is far less than last season’s staggered prices of $18, $15, and $13.

“There really isn’t any other sports venue this economical for a family outing,” said Warren Back the Gems director of business affairs. Last year’s season ticket package was over $500, this year it is $367.

Garfield admits the partners would like to add a few more investors to the team. “We don’t need a lot of help, but we do need a little.” For that effort they have enlisted the help of The Sports Advisory Group.

With the Gems still in play Hextall is putting his attention on growing the league. Some cost changes are being considered such as lowering each team’s weekly payroll cap from $13,000 and shaving the team roster size a little. The idea is to make it more affordable for the team owners.

He hopes the league will have 8 or 10 teams in 2011. Hextall said he likes even numbers, that way no one has to sit out on weekends.

Rumors Surround Dayton Gems Press Confrence Coming Friday

The Press confrence is rescheduled to Monday May 3rd at 2pm due to schedule conflicts.

Something is brewing in the Dayton Gems Hockey front office over at Hara in Trotwood. A press conference is scheduled for Friday April 30 (rescheduled for May3rd) has local fans wondering.

The Gems recently ended their inaugural 25-46-4-1season looking for a new coach. Veteran coach John Marks gave the franchise his all but it was not enough as he couldn’t seem to skate just the right combination of players.

He did manage to give fans a pretty good show each week which led to better turnouts in the late season which is no small feat considering the last place finish in the IHL standings.

Rumors of some players already looking elsewhere for next season and even more rumors concerning the teams viability for a second season may have led to this week’s press conference. Tickets for next season are already on sale but changes in the front office staff have ticket holders wondering what is going on. IHL (International Hockey League) commissioner Dennis Hextall is scheduled to speak at the confrence.

An informed source said the announcements should be exciting for Gems fans. Let’s hope this week’s announcement will put everyone at ease as the team recharges the zamboni this summer in preparation for bigger and better hockey at Hara this fall.

T-M Heads To Regionals

By Bruce Kettelle

After being stopped by Centerville last year, things are quite different for the Trotwood-Madison Rams basketball team. Trotwood’s decisive 52-32 win over the Centerville Elks this weekend moves the basketball team into the regional brackets.

Trotwood earned its sixth straight GWOC Championship title this season. The last time they saw regional action was 2008 after they won a face off against Moeller for the sectional title. This year the team is deep in talent propelled by DaWaun Thomas named to the all-district first team and Darnell Tubbs named to the all-district third team. The Rams record now sits at 19 wins, 4 losses.

The regional playoff starts with a run against Archbishop Moeller (18-4) on Saturday March 13 in UD Arena at 3:45. Moeller will undoubtedly be thinking about the close 48-45 Ram victory at their last meeting. Considering the talent on both benches Saturday’s game will be filled with drama.

The winner will move on to play the winner of the Princeton/Fairmont match on March 17. That was before Yerrick and Brunner decided to move ahead with a team this year. “These are hockey lovers and local business owners,” said Karen Wampler promotions director at Hara.

Garfield, a season ticket holder, had already been helping with the team’s cash flow before the IHL put them on notice last week. “Things happened very quickly,” he said. “It costs about $20,000 a week to run the team.”

When asked about his attendance goals he said he wants to start seeing sellouts. He fondly remembers when the previous Gems teams filled Hara and tickets were hard to get.

Rob Garfiled has been a hockey fan for a long time and now is part of the GDHL, LLC partnership that owns the IHL Dayton Gems.
He said the coach and team are doing a great job on the ice and he wants to focus more on marketing. He sees the team becoming known as a locally owned team that develops partnerships with local businesses. He also envisions reaching out to build ticket sales at Wright Patterson Air Force Base and other large area employers.

Ticket prices were also mentioned as something the partners will take a look at. “We may make some adjustment so fans get the best possible value,” said Garfield.

Payroll is up to date and the team has not missed a game. Players are gearing up for two home games this weekend, Saturday against Fort Wayne at 7:30 and Sunday against Port Huron at 7:30pm (the later start time is a change from the original schedule). The Gems had stepped up their game this week and made several strong attacks. The Icehawks held, breaking up key plays and even defended an empty net power play during the last two minutes of the evening.

Ryan Mior had the night off which put the pressure on Derek Macintyre(1-4) in the goal. In fact they did it twice.

The Gems first win of the season came on Friday night in Muskegon 7-5. That was their third game of the season. Then during their third home game of the season they picked up their second win on Sunday 5-4 against the Flint Generals.

Apparently more practice and a few lineup changes are having an effect since their opening weekend resulted in two losses.

This week Coach John Marks cut Mike Busto, Bobby Reed and Travis Winters. He added Matt Auffrey a former Dayton Bomber and Edgars Brancis of the Latvian Pro League.

The Gems also added another loss over the weekend making their record 2-3 falling in Bloomington 0-4 on Saturday night.

Friday in Muskegon goals were added by Joe VanCulin, Jonathon Ornelas, Mike Masklonka, John Snowden, Michael Mullin, AJ Maclean, and Mike Vaskivus.

Scoring in Hara against Flint Sunday for the Gems were Greg Labenski (2), John Snowden, Joe VanCulin, and Mike Vaskivo. The Gems trailed 3-2 at the end of the 1st period. Dayton took the lead for the rest of the game after a rally about 8 minutes into the second period.

This coming weekend the Gems will be on the road. They are back in Trotwood for a three game streak November 6, 7, & 8. A three game ticket is available for $33 at Hara or any Ticketmaster. The team is also expected to announce some changes in their regular ticket prices this week. In the confines of Hara Arena the fans sounded loud but on the ice the Gems were still trying to polish their game after Friday’s unsuccessful tiebreaker.

Despite Bloomington’s loss to Muskegon at their season opener earlier in the weekend they were able to muster a third period rally taking home a 4-2 win from this road trip.

Looks like the Gems may be working overtime in practice this week after failing to last in their first two third periods. Friday it appeared they ran out of gas and Sunday coach John Marks said they weren’t playing as a team.

Prairiethunder forward Jon Boras scored one of his two game points in the first period. Gem Jon Snowden answered back in the second to tie up the game going into the third period.

Bloomington was on fire in the third with goals from Brian Boulay, Ryan Finnerty and Boras.

Mike Vaskivuo drilled the only third period goal for the Gems.

The Gems go on the road visiting Muskegon Friday and Bloomington Saturday for a rematch. Audio for those games can be heard live on-line at www.DaytonGems.com
Sunday they are back in Trotwood with a 5pm start against the Flint Generals.

Jon Boras shoots his second goal past Dayton Gem Ryan Mior as the Bloomington Lumberjacks clinch the win 4-2.

John Snowden landed a second period goal for Dayton.

Gems Drop Opener In Tiebreaker

Dayton hockey fans easily drowned out the 300 or so Indiana commuters that made the three hour trek to Hara Arena Friday. That is until a 3rd period rally that erased the early Gems lead sending the season opener into overtime.

Two minutes later the Ft Wayne Komets claimed the 4-3 victory.

The Dayton Gems emerged strong scoring twice in the first period and again in the second. It was all there, puck handling, big checks on the boards, and 2800 new fans eager to enjoy the inaugural IHL season in the revamped Hara.

The Gems were game on during the first two periods chalking up a 3-1 lead with goals by Sam Bloom, Johnathon Ornelas, and Phil Youngclaus. But last seasons IHL champions controlled the third period effectively shutting down the Gem offense. Coach John Marks has created a young dream team with all the players between 22 and 31 years old. This final lineup will meet last year’s IHL Turner Cup Champs tonight for the regular season opener in Hara Arena at 8pm.

The old man of the first year franchise is a familiar name in Dayton following his 3-year run with the now defunct Dayton Bombers. Greg Labenski (31) will be a starting forward bringing a depth of professional experience since his 1995 debut in the OHL.

The young man on the Gems roster is goalie Ryan Mior (22). But their power failure soon returned and that would be their only goal as the Gems cemented their second pre-season win 9-1 in preparation for Friday’s season opener against Ft Wayne at Trotwood's Hara Arena.

While the Evansville Icemen waited for the replacement bus to arrive in Louisville they probably spent more time together as a team than they have all season. Their training camp just opened Monday and they only had two practices under their belt. Their league, the AAHL, starts two weeks after the Gems’s IHL gets underway.

Dayton on the other hand made their last roster cuts after the game signaling they are at the end of their training camp. Coach John Marks watched the game from the upstairs press box for a different view of the players before making those final decisions.

On the ice coaching for the game was left up to starting defenseman Greg Labenski. Marks already knows he is a keeper. Sam Bloom, Chris Clark and Johnathon Ornelas each scored twice. Edgars Brancis, Mike Mullen, and Ohil Youngclaus each added one.

Ice hockey crowds are also proving to be keepers at Hara. Over 1400 were on hand last night, up from the 900 at last week’s pre-season game. Comments from the crowd were positive and tickets are selling fast to Fridays game against the Ft Wayne Komets starting at 8pm. To the delight of fans and team management is was a win win for the Wamplers old hockey barn.

On the ice the Gems dominated the scoring in the 4-2 preseason win. This is the IHL Gems only ECHL matchup this season and former Dayton Bombers fans couldn’t help but think of some past matchups with the former Toledo Storm.

But the Toledo Walleye, even with a new name and a new home arena, could not put it together. Both teams were trying out new players and both coaches were watching closely as deadlines near to reduce their rosters.

That translated to some exciting play giving the 700 fans in Hara their can’s worth of entertainment. Admission to both pre-season games is free with a canned good donation for the local food bank. The promotion netted an overflowing cartful of food in the front lobby.

It also netted some additional season ticket sales for the fledgling Dayton franchise. One Trotwood resident confided to us after the game that they were sold on both the team and Hara, and will be purchasing season tickets next week.

The next preseason game at Hara is October 14th against Evansville at 7pm. For ticket information contact the Dayton Gems office at (937)275-7777.

With 1:44 left in the second period Phil Youngclaus gets this shot over Toledo’s Steve Silver and Milan Maslonka giving the Dayton Gems a 3-1 lead. The Gems prevailed in their first IHL home pre-season match against the ICHL Toledo Walleye 4-2.

Fans got a taste of some great ice hockey. Both teams were trying to prove something to their coaches in the preseason event at Hara Arena in Trotwood

By the third period some of Toledo’s frustration began to show as players resolved some differences. This unshirted Walleye found himself escorted to the penalty bow. Fans seated behind the box reported seeing some deep scratches on his back before he re-dressed.

More pictures at http://trotwoodsports.blogspot.com/2009/10/hockey-fans-enjoy-dayton-gems-pictures.html

Gems Offer Free Tickets To Pre Season Games

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 257px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_G2QfI2oHdhY/SsuJR0SPKMI/AAAAAAAACgc/C0YN3DCrmsc/s320/DSCF1449.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5389552318264846530" />
By Bruce Kettelle

A dozen hockey fans watched the Dayton Gems practice Monday morning in Trotwood's Hara Arena. On the ice some old favorites from last years Dayton Bombers practiced their puck handling with many skaters new to the area. Coach John Marks surveyed the prospects trying to decide who to keep for the final 20-man roster.

One sure bet is former Bomber Greg Labenski who shredded past the delighted group of season ticket holders anxious for opening day on October 16. About 30 prospects were on the ice.

Today the Gems announced fans can get half price or free admission to the upcoming preseason games against Toledo October 8th 7:30pm and Evansville on the 14th 7:00pm. The ice is back and the smell of hockey is in the air for the most recent Dayton Gems ‘Pick A Seat’ event.

Standing at the bottom of the ramp next to the ice is the towering profile of coach John Marks talking with a few fans. The season ticket shoppers really seemed to enjoy the opportunity to hear his ideas about how hockey should be played.

Nearby a former Dayton Bombers season ticket holder from Beavercreek was pacing back and forth near a group of seats close to the goal. He was checking the view of the ice and trying to pick a location that wasn’t already tagged as sold.

Scattered throughout the 5,000 seat arena were 8x11” signs taped to specific seats marking them as sold. We counted about 400 seats that have already been scooped up.

There were only two seats left in the row right behind the home team’s box and two hockey fans were already there looking at what might be their home for the inaugural IHL hockey season in Dayton. The two women were all smiles when Marks took the time to come over and chat.

The Gems are on the home stretch to get a few more season tickets sold before the first game October 16 when they meet last years IHL cup winners the Ft Wayne Komets.

One of the arena crewmembers, water hose in hand, ventures out onto the new sheet of ice and starts to build up another layer on the virgin surface. In a few days Disney On Ice will be taking over Trotwood’s Hara Arena for one of their famous shows and then the hockey players will get their turn.

Beyond the ice visitors will notice some other improvements. A makeover in the concourse with new lighting, lots of fresh paint including the seats, a freshened up Hara Pub, and new lights in the parking lot are just a few of the visible changes so far.

Marks said they have just about filled the new team’s roster. He seems quite pleased with the skill sets in the lineup but we’ll save that for a later story. He said both he and the team are anxious to get practices underway.

Before opening day there will be a series of exhibition games to help get the skaters up to speed. The first pre-season sneak peaks at home are October 8 and 14 against the ECHL Toledo Walleye and AAHL Evansville IceMen. If you’re up for a trip there’s an earlier one in Ft Wayne, IN October 7 against the Komets.

Game tickets range from $13 to $18. $2 discounts are available for various groups including children and seniors. Stadium for the second half of last night’s weather delayed game were not disappointed today. Trotwood-Madison fielded the same players but looked like a different team. If they didn’t have to count the 0-10 first half performance Thursday night the Rams would have walked away winners.

The Rams opened quickly scoring twice in the early minutes of the second half to make it 14-10. But the Mason Comets were determined not to let the previous night’s efforts slip away and drove for a fourth quarter touchdown (14-17).

Trotwood not known for it’s field goal abilities drove into filed goal range and to the delight of the crowds Mouhamadou Seck connected for three tying up the game. Mason answered with a field goal of their own.

Trotwood’s drive in the last minutes moved the ball inside the 45-yard-line with a stunning 30-yard pass to Justin Favors. The electrified crowd roared.

The next play ended the game but not for Trotwood. Mason picked off a Ram pass and downed the ball to run out the last minute on the clock. Final score 17-20.

Watch for Antwan Gilbert at next week’s match against Dunbar also at Welcome Stadium on September 5th 7pm. He had some great moves today scoring both touchdowns.

Reprints of these photos are available from Robert Knoll Studio

Trotwood Rams Season Opener At Welcome

UPDATE! Due to lightning the game was postponed at halftime and will resume at 3:30 today (Friday August 28) at Welcome Stadium. At the half Trotwood was scoreless 10-0. The Rams moved the ball several times but could not penetrate from the red zone. Both coaches will use this time to fine tune their strategies. Can Trotwood turn this delay into a win?

Varsity football’s first regular season start is on a Thursday this year. The non-Friday-night game is part of the two-day Skyline Chili Crosstown Showdown at Welcome Stadium.

This will be the first full test of the 2009 Ram squad after showing dynamic promise in pre-season scrimmages.

The Trotwood-Madison Rams will take the field against Mason at 8pm. Fans can come early to see the Chaminade Julienne/Troy match up starting at 5:30 on the same ticket.

John Marks Brings Winning Combination To Gems

By Bruce Kettelle

John Marks knows ice hockey. Tuesday gave Dayton hockey fans a chance to know John Marks.

With about 800 games on his skates mostly with the Chicago Blackhawks he knows how to play the game. Since retiring as an NHL player he’s coached 1,800 games and he knows how to coach. He is bringing that winning combination to the ice in Trotwood’s Hara Arena as the coach of the new Dayton Gems IHL franchise.

Marks talked openly with reporters and about 70 fans during his introductory press conference at Hara. He shared his philosophy and some of his strategies to build a winning team.

“I always feel the team takes on the personality of the coach,” said the self-described bear. He insists each of his players show up ready to compete.

“You can’t play the game with eggs in your pants,” Marks responded to a fan about aggressive play on the ice. “To take the puck you have to get in there.”

He said fans like the emotional aspect of players dropping their gloves on the ice but not to the point of it becoming idiotic.hockey. “You need intelligence to go about doing it.”

Marks admits he still has work ahead to fill the Gems player roster. “We have some good personnel defensively, the more you control the puck the more you will score.”

As an example he pointed to the teams first signee former Bomber Greg Labinski. “He is going to be one of the leaders in our hockey club.”

The Gems have already recruited former Dayton Bombers Labinski and Joe Van Culin. Asked if more Bomber signings are in the offing Marks said many of their players have already signed with other team but didn’t rule out adding more from the defunct roster. “We’ll never turn down a good hockey player.”

They will all get their chance soon at an upcoming tryout camp at Hara. And Marks said he is looking everywhere to find more up and coming talent.

After the press conference the smiling Marks was reminded again what it is like to be a player out on the ice. A fan came up with two Marks Blackhawk hockey trading cards and asked for a signature. The excited Gems season ticket holder exclaimed, “the only reason I bought a season ticket is because of you, I know you will build a competitive team.”

Marks promises it is going to be a really exciting show during the games and believes Hara is a marvelous place to play. “Lets get this arena roaring again.”

John Marks Career Highlights

Selected by Chicago Blackhawks round 1 #9 overall 1968 NHL Amateur Draft.

First college player ever picked in the first round.

Ten seasons playing experience with the Chicago Blackhawks of the NHL (1972-1982)

675 career NHL games.

112 career NHL goals.

275 career NHL points.

Former holder of the fastest two goals at the start of the game by the same player record (:14, :33)

Selected to NHL all star team 1976 in Philadelphia.

Three career coaching championships, (Charlotte ECHL 1996, Greenville ECHL 2002, Fayetteville SPHL 2007)

Six years head coaching experience in IHL (Kalamazoo/Indianapolis)

16 out of 22 head coaching seasons with a +.500 record.

Born March 22, 1948 in Winnepeg, Manitoba.

Inducted in to the Manitoba Hockey Hall of Hall of Fame and the University of North Dakota Hockey Hall of Fame

Two time all-American at University of North Dakota (Junior and Senior year 1968-69, 1969-70)

Married with two children, Tricia, married lives in Charlotte, NC, son Logan, senior in high school Moorhead, MN.

see the current team roster here

Dayton Gems Hockey Unveil 09-10 Schedule

The Dayton Gems released the comeback season schedule today with 38 home games to be played at Hara Arena in Trotwood OH. The long anticipated season faces off October 16th at home against the Ft. Wayne Comets and ends at home April 16 skating against the Muskegon Lumber Jacks.

All home games will be played on Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. The International Hockey League covers two time zones so pay close attention to away game local start times.

One notable entry is the Gems 45th anniversary game on October 31 in Port Huron. The very first Dayton Gems game was played on that date in 1964 in the same city.

The team is accepting orders for season ticket packages at 275-7777. The month old team is already hiring players and getting ready for their triumphant return to Dayton's best hockey barn, Hara Arena. Amid all of that work he hasn't lost sight of making time to concentrate on selling tickets. Neither have we. If you haven't already acquired some tickets consider giving them a call. There are pricing packages to fit every budget. Also watch for the release of this fall's season schedule in the coming days. We have many original stories about the Dayton Gems click on the hockey label for a complete list. ---

Dayton Gems Press Release - July 2009
Gems Ticket is Best Value in Miami Valley Hockey

The Bombers have bombed. The Ice Bandits ran off. The Owls didn't give a hoot. So here we are in 2009 with the return of the International Hockey League, where it all started for the Gems and Dayton hockey. Back at Hara Arena, the Gems plan to open the IHL hockey season October 16 at home.

Season tickets are still available at a considerable savings, factoring in free parking as a season ticket holder, Gold season tickets are less than $10 per game!!! You can reserve your seat for only $100 per ticket/down payment, and still have three months to pay the balance off by October 1. Call the Gems office TODAY at (937) 275-7777 to pick a seat - while the picking is still good.

For less than $10 a night per ticket, where can the family go to see good, fun, fast paced, action packed excitement, like an IHL hockey game? Two people can't even go to the movies for $20 anymore. You're surely not going to a play, opera, concert, or recital, for less than that. A few years ago some people might have filled the gas tank and just drove around for entertainment, but with gas prices being what they are now, that isn't saving you any money. At full value, with season tickets, a family of four can go to a Gems hockey game for $36.50 per game! That's the best value ticket in the Miami Valley.

Let's talk “AA” hockey. Looking into the debate between the CHL, ECHL, and IHL, we find three leagues all competing in a “AA” hockey status. The ECHL claims they are the “Premier AA Hockey league,” the CHL claims “highest attendance in “AA” hockey,” and the IHL just plays hockey. They don't claim to be premier, elite, or fight for recognition – because they know what they are. They are the league with the highest paid players in “AA” hockey – they are “AA-plus.” When the original IHL started back in 1945 there were four teams, it wasn't until four years later that the league was up to eight. I find it amusing that many people have knocked the IHL for only having six teams for the past two seasons, when the original IHL had less than that. History has a way of repeating itself.

Well, as for a conclusion Daytonians, you've got history at Hara Arena. You've got the first hockey game ever played in Dayton there. You've got friends who saw their first game there. You've got Warren Back, Guy Trottier, Moe Benoit, Pat Rupp's wife, Kathy, and Mrs. Lefty McFadden who have all come out in support of this team. You've got committed owners, who are huge hockey fans, that have moved here to support the hockey community and Dayton, Ohio. You've got old memories, and new traditions awaiting you. You've got hockey, Dayton. IHL hockey. Guaranteed to be the best
“show” this season that Dayton hockey has been for a very long time. In short, get the season ticket, and you've have the Best Value in Miami Valley Hockey.

1001 Shiloh Springs Dayton, Ohio 45415 (937) 275-7777

Dayton Bombers Throw In The Towel

By Bruce Kettelle

After months of speculation the Dayton Bombers threw in the towel today announcing they would close and give up the 18-year old ECHL franchise.

Today at the ECHL Board of Governors meeting in Las Vegas, Bombers owner Cost Papista ended all thoughts of the team coming back. Papista announced in April that the financially struggling team would skip the 2009-2010 season while they looked for a new financial partner. That search proved unsuccessful.

The Bombers started play at Hara Arena in 1991. Previous owners, confronted with numerous sellouts, began looking for a larger hockey venue and in 1996 moved the team to the Nutter Center on the campus of Wright State University.

Ticket sales plummeted at the new venue and the team changed ownership several times over the years. Despite numerous marketing strategies the team was never able to pull the crowds to the newer facility that was originally designed for basketball.

Earlier this month a new team in a different league announced they would enter the market and play at Hara Arena. The Dayton Gems of the IHL will take the ice this fall giving local ice hockey fans a new choice without missing a season.

Deposits for season tickets will be returned by the teams law firm.

Les Gemmes Choisissent Votre Chaise Part Deux

By Bruce Kettelle

Ok, so my French is very rusty but its time to start getting really excited about ice hockey coming back to Hara in Trotwood. And we want our French Canadian friends to feel right at home.

In case you can’t make it out the headline says ‘Gems Pick Your Seat Part Two.’ In case you missed their first pick a seat in June the Dayton Gems are opening up the arena a second time for fans to come in and try out a few seats to select the best location for their season tickets.

“We sold nearly 100 tickets,” said Matt Goshert of the first pick a seat night. “Fans got a chance to see the arena . . . people were very happy to see the condition it is in and hear of the plans we have for even more improvement.” Goshert is the director of sales and marketing for this IHL franchise.

So while newly named coach John Marks is concentrating on recruiting players (and we hope he’s looking for a few secret weapons in Canada) the fans are already getting settled in the best hockey barn in Ohio.

The Dayton Gems Pick Your Seat Night Part 2 will be July 2nd from 5-8pm in Hara Arena. Marks will begin his position as Head Coach/Director of Player Personnel on July 1 for the franchise.

Former NHL player John Marks spent ten years with the Chicago Blackhawks setting a career record
of 112 goals, 163 assists, and 275 points in 657 career games. After retiring in 1988, Marks began his professional coaching career in the IHL with the Kalamazoo Wings, serving for four seasons.

Marks has an amazing twenty year coaching record, having made playoffs 15 times, and winning championships 3 of those 15. Only about five other coaches have a winning record that is close to Marks. Since 1993 Marks has coached in the ECHL, spending the majority of that time in Charlotte and Greenville. Marks is also a member of the Manitoba Hockey Hall of Fame.

“You guys have a coach. I am truly grateful for the opportunity and I look forward to a great season.” Marks told franchise owners Richard Bruner and Ryan Yerrick this past week.

“Marks record speaks for itself. Add to that, he is a good guy, and that makes a winning combination for the Gems. Now he just needs to bring us a championship and we're all set.” said co-owner Ryan Yerrick, adding, “All kidding aside, we expect to have a tough product on the ice this season, and Rich (Bruner) and I believe Marks will help deliver what we want to see.”

Guy Trottier, Director of Hockey Operations for the Gems said “You can count on Marks to deliver.” Trottier began a scouting trip this past Tuesday and has been taking meetings with players and teams from New York to Canada. With Marks joining the group, Trottier and Marks will be recruiting players to prepare for their training camp, presently slated to be September 14-25 in Dayton, pending the final release of the IHL schedule coming soon.

Gems Ticket Sales Exceeding Goals

By Bruce Kettelle

The phones in the new Dayton Gems hockey team office in Hara have been in overdrive said a press release issued this morning.

Their drive to get early commitments from fans will get another push on Thursday June 18th when they open the arena to fans from 5-8 to come in and pick out their favorite seat.

“Tickets are selling at about 45mph, if the current speed would continue we would be sold out in two months,” said team co-owner Richard Brunner “We’re exceeding our preliminary goals.”

They have four telephone lines and every once in a while someone has trouble getting through. There will even be a few door prizes.

Marketing Director Matt Goshert points out that full season ticket holders get free game parking as an added incentive.

If you can’t wait until Thursday you can always purchase your tickets at the Hara box office or by calling 275-7777.

Rams Break Own 4x400 Relay Record At State

Rams Break Own 4x400 Relay Record At State
By Bruce Kettelle

The Runnin’ Rams have done it again. Burning up the track at the state championship tournament in Columbus the Trotwood-Madison Rams claimed the 2009 title in the 4x400 relay breaking their own record they set just last year.

Julius Ruby, Jordan Paschel, Michael Jordan and William Henry blasted out of the gate deciding the race before the first handoff. The team ran a 3:13:32 beating their 2008 record run by 16 hundredths.

Track coach Randy Waggoner’s last minute add of Jordan to the relay team really paid off giving the Rams their only win this year at the state competition.

Trotwood will still be the one to watch in this event for 2010. All four of the runners will return next season.

Also spotted in Columbus was retired Trotwood coach John Mckinney. McKinney said he just couldn’t stay away. IHL Chairman Michael Franke delivered the news and said he looks forward to new rivalries especially between the Ft Wayne Comets and the Dayton Gems. Ft Wayne is the closest IHL team to Dayton.

The fall schedule has not been created but Franke assured fans there will be exciting action on the ice in October.

(more in a few minutes)
(here's more of the story)

It’s official and hockey fans are rejoicing. Dayton will have hockey in 2009 and it will be at Hara right here in Trotwood

The Dayton Gems, that’s right they are using the old name retired 20 some years ago, are a brand new franchise in the IHL (International Hockey League). New owners Richard Brunner and Ryan Yerrick of Ft Wayne Indiana scrambled to create the new team when word got out that the Dayton Bombers were closing down due to financial challenges.

IHL Chairman Michael Franke delivered the news in person during a press conference in Hara this morning. Franke said he looks forward to new rivalries especially between the Ft Wayne Comets and the Dayton Gems. Ft Wayne is the closest IHL team to Dayton.

Not surprisingly a few hockey fans managed to crash the press conference. Sporting a Dayton Gems hockey jersey was former Dayton Bomber season ticket holder Steve Macdougarr. “I’m already signed up for four Gems season tickets,” he said enthusiastically.

Macdougarr said the writing seemed to be on the wall for the Dayton Bombers and he was reluctant to reup his season tickets there for another season which he thought might not happen. The Bombers owner announced in April they would not be able to play in October at the Nutter Center due to financial difficulties.

“It was very sterile watching games at the Nutter,” said Macdougarr. He said he became even more aware of the unfriendly environment after seeing the Bombers playoffs in 2002 which were moved to Hara Arena because of scheduling problems. “It seemed there were fewer fans at the Nutter Center after that game in Hara.”

He noted that the Nutter always felt a little empty with its 10,000 seats. “In Hara if they draw 4,000 it will feel packed.”

The Dayton suburb of Trotwood is the actual home of Hara, a fact that didn’t go unnoticed by local officials. Mayor Darreyl Davis and members of the city council were on hand to welcome the Gems to town and congratulate the owners of Hara for landing the startup team on such short notice.

Rue Wampler one of the arena’s family owners sported a suit for the occasion but said his jeans were in his office so he could change after the press conference. “I’ve got six years of work to do in just a few months,” he said about getting the arena in shape for the team’s debut in October.

Exactly what those improvements are was left unstated but fans will be able to see some while the players will see others such as the makeover of the locker rooms.

Former Gem coach and player Warren Back as Director of Business Affairs is one of the first hires in the team’s front office. Another former player Guy Trottier is Director of Hockey Operations. Matt Goshert Director of Sales and Marketing, and Bob Brogan Corporate Sales Coordinator round out the initial operation.

The schedule will include 38 home games in Hara this season. The full schedule will be finalized during the league’s annual meeting June 15-17th. The team began accepting season ticket reservations last week by phone at 275-7777.

Gems Press Conference Is On

By Bruce Kettelle

Staff at Hara Arena in Trotwood confirmed late this afternoon that the press conference for the Dayton Gems is a go for tomorrow morning. The Dayton Gems new owners, Richard Bruner and Ryan Yerrick, secured the old Gems name via a lease agreement with Jeffrey Walker, negotiated by Warren Back, the teams new Director of Business Affairs. Reliable sources say the deal is so close that a press conference may occur soon.

The timing coincides with the IHL’s upcoming annual convention of owners. Commitments need to be in place before that meeting to get on the fall schedule.

Sources say the investors are focused on Hara.

Meanwhile another confidential source claims that the Dayton Bombers last minute efforts to financially resuscitate that franchise are falling short. There is less than a month left before the ECHL annual convention. Rescue plans need to be in place before that meeting.

The Bombers owner is said to claim nearly 400 advance season ticket sales are in hand. That number is significantly less than the 1,200 target.

Totally Trotwood will have the latest hockey news as it becomes available.

Hockey Rumors Rocking Dayton

By Bruce Kettelle

With the cancellation of next year’s ECHL Dayton Bombers season it seems the scramble to keep hockey in Dayton is rising to a new fervor. ECHL, IHL and now even USHL teams have crossed the blue line and are racing for the net.

The Bombers’ owner leads the pack with fundraising efforts underway to save the financially beleaguered franchise. Recent efforts to sell advance season tickets and lure new investors continue but a June 25th deadline is closing in.

Owner Costa Papista needs to notify the ECHL League by that date of his plans to put the Bombers on the ice in 2010. Missing the deadline threatens his rights to continue the Bombers franchise agreement. So far little news has been leaked about the success of his efforts.

The IHL has met with officials from Trotwood’s HARA Arena about locating a new franchise there for either the 2009 or 2010 season. An investor group has expressed interest but no agreements have been reached. With each passing day a 2009 start seems more remote.

Today it was learned that the USHL has entered the fray. Confidential sources said they are looking at both Hara and the Hobart Arena in Troy. The USHL is a 12-team junior hockey league. This month they are close to adding a 13th team to play in Youngstown Ohio.

With the arrival of USHL interest, hockey fans are bound to have a spirited debate over the qualities of the three leagues.

But one thing is definitely for sure. With many of their team members already signing contracts with teams in other cities, the Bombers will not be playing in Dayton this fall.

Lets us know what you think in our comments section.

Trotwood's all powerful 4x400 relay team is consistently proving year after year, indoors or outdoors, they are the team to beat. The Bombers announced that they would not be playing next season, and possibly longer.

The Bombers were not alone. The ECHL also announced that the Mississippi Sea Wolves and the Phoenix Road Runners would not be playing next season.

In published reports owner Costa Papista cited inadequate ticket sales and falling sponsorship revenue. The Bombers moved from Hara to the Nutter Center in 1996 and have averaged 3,600 fans per game the last two seasons.

Costa’s attendance claim however may be exaggerated. Actual paid attendance has averaged closer to 1,800 according to officials at the Nutter.

“The last year at Hara the Bombers averaged 4,200 fans per game,” said Karen Wampler Hara’s marketing director. She believes hockey can be profitable at Hara.

Since the Bomber’s departure Hara hosted another minor league team but the Ice Bandits only lasted two seasons. Wampler feels the Dayton market can only support one hockey team and they have not pursued it again until now.

Tuesday morning Wampler was on the phone talking with Revolution Sports in Columbus. The company has been in discussions with Hara to introduce another indoor sports team in Hara this year. Besides arena football and lacrosse the company also has interests in hockey according to their web site. Beyond Revolution Wampler says they have several other interested parties.

Hara has a long history with ice hockey. Soon after the arena’s completion in 1964 the Dayton Gems began a 13-year stretch on the new ice. Even since the Bombers 1996 departure they have continued to showcase youth (see picture above from Silver Sticks Tournament) and college hockey over the years. The Bombers did return to Hara for one game during the 2002 playoffs because of scheduling conflicts at the Nutter.

“The Nutter is a wonderful facility but it’s not a hockey facility,” said Wampler. “We are sorry to hear the Bombers are discontinuing operation, it’s a real loss for the area.”

“We would love to have professional hockey back at Hara,” said Wampler. “People seem to like the total experience offered at Hara.” She has heard from a lot of fans that miss the ambiance at Hara. “I think Hara is the best location for hockey in Dayton.”

Wampler said she is not sure if it is feasible to expect Hara to have a team ready to play this fall. But she doesn’t completely rule out that possibility. “If there could be a transition with an established team like the Bombers it could be possible.”

Indoor 4x400 Relay Akron 3/21/09

Trotwood Runnin Rams prove they are the real deal this spring. Now we don't like to cry over spilled milk but there was so much covering the floor at the UD Arena on Saturday March 14th it is worthwhile to bring it up.

It must be noted that the Rams never led this defensive battle but managed to claw their way back from a 12-point deficit to tie it up twice in the 4th period. And that is where the milk really started flowing.

With .8 seconds left in the game Centerville made one last charge at the hoop. It looked like overtime was inevitable but there was that annoying whistle once again. A foul called against Trotwood gave the Elks two shots. The first one missed and the second one won the game 52-51.

The foul call did happen and is recorded for posterity on video available on the Dayton Daily News web site. But was the call really necessary. The light brush on the arm by Trotwood was late in the shot that wasn't going in.

The still picture above was taken a fraction of a second before the foul occurred. Trotwood's defensive bloc was well in place and Centerville seems to have just run into it.

A Trotwood Fan filed a protest with the athletic association but they have ruled the call and the game stands. On Tuesday the high school held a press conference.

Students at the press conference were quick to say they don't hold anything against Centerville. Their quibble is with the referee that made the last second call. That referee, Angelo Jolatos, is the center of all the complaints.

Coach Mark Baker said, "That call should never been made, in the end I think it was flat out wrong."

"We want to congratulate Centerville," continued Baker. But Baker wants OHSAA to look into the officiating matter.

He believes there were inconsistent calls throughout the game against both teams. "We want someone to give us an explanation." He also hopes that something like this won't happen again to Trotwood or any other team.

Teammate Arron Robinson said from his position on the court there did not appear to be contact.

The bottom line came from Trotwood high school principal Gerald Cox. "It is our opinion the outcome of the game was taken out of the hands of the athlete."
